Tribute to Killie legend Davie Sneddon

Apr 2 2008

Kilmarnock Standard

KILLIE legend Davie Sneddon is streets ahead of the opposition — and that’s official!

The former player, trainer and manager of the club has just been honoured by fans who voted for a new housing development at Rugby Park to be named after him.

And there was no-one more delighted than the man himself, who celebrates his 72nd birthday on April 24, the 42nd anniversary of the day Killie won the league.

He said: “It was a terrific day, and I was delighted and honoured for the street to be named after me.

“All my family were there to enjoy the moment too, including my grandchildren Lucy and Martin. It was a smashing day all round.”

Davie famously scored in the 2-0 defeat of Hearts in April 1965 which clinched the league title for Killie.

A true Killie stalwart, he was reserve trainer from 1972 to 1977 and manager from 1977 to 1981.

He still puts in an appearance on match days at Rugby Park, helping out with hospitality.

The Killie Trust’s Barry Richmond said: “The Killie Trust were delighted to be involved in the naming of the new street.

“We feel that Davie Sneddon is a worthy recipient of such an accolade.

Councillor Douglas Reid, council leader, said: “I was so pleased my fellow fans chose to name the new street after Davie Sneddon.

“He’s a true Killie legend and certainly deserves this tribute."
