Killie boss wants to end season on a high

Apr 9 2008

By Clair Fullarton, Kilmarnock Standard

IT might not be the exciting climax to the season that the Killie management team, players and fans wanted, but this week the gaffer said he still wanted his side to end on a high.

The SPL split sees Killie face Caley away a week on Saturday, followed by a home fixture against Gretna, an away trip to St Mirren, and a home game against Hearts.

The season finale sees Killie entertain Falkirk, who narrowly missed out on a top six place earlier this week.

Admittedly there’s very little to get excited about, but Jim Jefferies insists his players will be up for the task.

Said Jefferies: “Apart from the Gretna game, we’ve had a decent spell of late and we’ll be looking to finish as high as we can.

“Hopefully we can do as well as we did when we were in this position in the past and give the fans a sense of renewed optimism ahead of the new season.”

Meanwhile the chairman Michael Johnston is urging the fans to get right behind the team, especially in the remaining two home games.

Johnston said: “It is important the players perform as best they can as every place means £90,000 to us, so the higher we finish the better it will be in terms of our budget for next season.”

To encourage a healthy turnout at the two home games, the club is bringing back its kids for a quid scheme.

For the games on April 26 and May 17 all children under 16 will be allowed entry to all stands for just a £1.

Jefferies confirmed this week that Frazer Wright, Craig Bryson, Willie Gibson and Alan Morgan will all go under the surgeon’s knife within the next couple of weeks to give them ample time to recover for the start of next season.

It will mean the side’s starlets will be given another chance to shine.

Jefferies said: “If there has been any positives to take out of the position we find ourselves in, it is the young players who’ve had to come in to the side have been outstanding.

“The likes of Hamill, Bryson and Flanningan have all shown what they can do and are now in a position to compete for a place in the side.”
